Traditional Chinese Medicine is an independent system of diagnosis and intervention that was developed in Ancient China and refined over thousands of years. It encompasses a variety of modalities, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, manual therapies, exercise therapies, and meditative practices. A core principle of TCM is the relationship between the many systems of the body as well as the numerous internal and external factors that affect health, acknowledging the connection between physical structure, internal functions, mental/emotional state, and environment. This forms the foundation of our "holistic" approach to healing -- we treat the person as a whole in the context of their individual needs and unique circumstances.
Prior to treatment, you can expect a comprehensive assessment based on your health history and chief complaint. You will then be asked to lie down during treatment for safety and comfort, and thin, sterile needles will be inserted into strategic points on your body. Acupuncture may cause sensations of warmth, heaviness, or tingling that is localized at the point of insertion or travels to different parts of the body. It is common to experience sudden drowsiness or euphoria, and patients are recommended to have eaten within 3 hours of treatment for best results. The needles may be retained in place for the remainder of your session, and all needles are removed before the end of your appointment.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are effective because they target the root cause of ailments. Treatment plans include methods to address both the underlying cause of discomfort and alleviate symptoms for faster relief. Response time varies depending on the type, severity, and duration of the condition, with some patients seeing immediate improvement, and most reporting significant changes in 4-6 treatments.
TCM practitioners are trained to adapt to different individuals' needs. If acupuncture and/or herbal medicine does not seem like a good fit for you, you will have the opportunity to explore additional options. Manual treatments, more in-depth discussion of dietary and lifestyle adjustments, and training in therapeutic/meditative exercises all fall within the scope of TCM practice and allow us to be flexible in how we address a wide variety of concerns.
